How to Extend the Lifespan of Lead-Acid Batteries on Electric Motorcycles
2026-05-25
As one of the most mainstream power configurations for cost-effective electric motorcycles, lead-acid batteries are widely equipped on our Yangguang Lingmu electric vehicles thanks to their stable performance and cost advantages. The standard service life of a qualified lead-acid battery ranges from 1.5 to 3 years. However, improper daily use and careless maintenance will drastically accelerate battery aging, cut down actual service life and increase your after-sales replacement costs.
To help all users maximize battery performance and extend service life effectively, our technical team from Yangguang Lingmu Electrocar Wuxi Co., Ltd. has sorted out targeted and practical lead-acid battery maintenance tips as follows.

1. Avoid Deep Discharges at All Times
Lead-acid batteries are prone to partial cycle memory during daily use. Long-term deep discharge will directly trigger severe sulfation inside the battery, forming stubborn lead sulfate crystals attached to battery plates. This irreversible chemical reaction will continuously reduce the actual battery capacity and weaken the cruising range of your electric motorcycle.
We recommend users recharge the battery timely when the remaining power drops to 50%-70%. Under no circumstances should you run the battery power below 20%. Repeated full deep discharges will cause permanent internal damage to the battery, which cannot be repaired through later charging or maintenance.
2. Follow Standard Charging Specifications
-
Match dedicated chargers: Always adopt an intelligent charger specially customized for lead-acid batteries. Do not use universal mismatched chargers for alternative charging, which will damage the battery charging protection system.
-
Cool down before charging: The battery will generate heat after riding. Please leave the battery to cool naturally for 30 minutes before starting charging, to avoid thermal stress damage caused by immediate charging of a high-temperature battery.
-
Prevent overcharging and undercharging: Overcharging will produce excessive heat inside the battery and evaporate internal electrolyte, while long-term undercharging will leave residual sulfate on battery plates and aggravate sulfation. Once the battery is fully charged, please disconnect the charger promptly. You can keep the charger connected only if your original matched charger supports automatic power-off function to avoid trickle overcharging.
3. Control Working and Storage Temperature
High temperature is the invisible killer of lead-acid batteries. Never park your electric motorcycle under direct blazing sunlight for a long time, or place it close to high-temperature engine parts. Continuous high temperature will accelerate battery self-discharge and shorten overall service life.
For cold winter use, do not charge the battery at an ultra-low temperature environment. If possible, move the battery indoors for preheating before charging, because charging a frozen lead-acid battery will lead to irreversible internal structural damage. The optimal ambient temperature for battery daily storage and use is kept between 10°C and 25°C (50°F - 77°F).
4. Conduct Routine Regular Maintenance
Regular routine inspection can effectively eliminate potential battery faults in advance:
-
Check battery terminals regularly to remove surface corrosion. Clean corroded terminals with a wire brush and baking soda solution, and wipe dry completely after cleaning.
-
Fasten loose wiring terminals in time to avoid unstable circuit connection and abnormal charging and discharging.
-
For maintainable flooded lead-acid batteries, replenish distilled water every 2 to 3 months as required. Never add tap water — mineral impurities contained in tap water will destroy the internal chemical environment of the battery and greatly reduce battery working performance.
5. Scientific Maintenance for Long-Term Battery Storage
If you need to store your electric motorcycle idle for more than one month, please follow our official storage guidelines: Fully charge the battery before long-term storage, then disconnect the battery terminals to cut off static power consumption. Besides, perform supplementary charging every 4 to 6 weeks regularly to offset natural battery self-discharge, preventing the battery from being damaged due to long-term power loss.
Standardized daily use and simple regular maintenance can effectively prolong the service life of lead-acid batteries, reduce your daily vehicle maintenance costs, and also cut down electronic waste. Yangguang Lingmu Electrocar Wuxi Co., Ltd. always focuses on user riding experience and after-sales service. Proper battery care will bring you more stable cruising performance and longer service life for your electric motorcycle.
